Since the World Cup title with Argentina in December, there’s no doubt that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is having the peak of his career.
His form has been enough to include him in the list of best goalkeepers of the year, and there’s someone who thinks he should actually win that prize.
That’s Martinez’s dad, who was this week interviewed by Radio Villa Trindad. In quotes featured by Olé, Beto Martinez talked about how highly he rates his son.
“It’s not me saying it, they say it all over the world, but yes, today as his father I can say: He’s the best goalkeeper in the world,” said Beto Martinez.
The father of the Aston Villa goalkeeper recalled that things hadn’t been easy in the past, though, as the player was not always selected to be in the team. He mentioned the times at Arsenal as an example of that.
“Today everyone tells you that Dibu is the best goalkeeper in the world, but he was also the lowest of all at one time. It was hard to watch him train all week and then see another goalkeeper play. He collided with Peter Cech and had to take it.”
Emiliano Martínez undoubtedly became a star in Argentina, with the local media making big coverage of his form at Aston Villa and his arrival to play with the national team in the current international break.
They will now be facing Ecuador and Bolivia in the opening rounds of the South American World Cup Qualifiers, where the goalkeeper will be once again eager to showcase his ability.
