Italian striker Manolo Gabbiadini had a short yet impactful spell at Southampton.
He played 60 games and scored 12 times in all competitions. Despite never truly being consistent, he scored a brace for the Saints in the 2017 League Cup final against Manchester United.
The striker has spoken to La Gazzetta dello Sport about his time at Southampton following his move from Napoli.
He had a lot of positive words to say about his time in England and that the Saints helped him achieve a dream.
“At 14 when I met Silvio Pagliari, my agent, I told him that one day I wanted to play there and he replied that he would mark it in his diary.
“The day I signed for Southampton I fulfilled that dream: it was an incredible experience.”
He was asked specifically about his brace against Manchester United at Wembley and he described only warm memories from that tie, even if Southampton eventually lost.
He said: “Beautiful, yes: in the League Cup final. I went out in the 83rd minute and Mourinho came to shake my hand while half of Wembley was singing my name. Unfortunately, immediately afterwards Ibra scored the 3-2 and we lost.”
It is clear that Gabbiadini has no regrets about his spell in England and that it was one of the best memories of his career.
The ex-Azzurri player made some impact in his short time at St Marys and Southampton fans still remember him quite fondly.
