Manchester City star Sergio Aguero is the man on the front page of Olé this Monday. The striker is adapting to Paton Bauza’s new system with the national team and had a long chat about the manager’s recent work.
Although most of the talk was about Argentina, Aguero was also asked to compare his new positioning to what is demanded of him at Manchester City.
Questioned if he has a much different position at the English club, the striker said: “Do you know what happens? Now at City I’m a nine. I’ve always played at Independiente with a centre forward, and at City before the arrival of Guardiola too. I don’t get lost.”
The player also revealed what Pep Guardiola asks hims to do: “He wants me right as a nine, but then he gives me more freedom too. He asks me to move all around the attack.
“On the other hand, Tata (Martino, former Argentina manager) wanted me between the two defenders, to create more space for Leo (Messi), Fideo (Di Maria) or Pastore or Banega. Pep is different.”
Asked to talk more about the Manchester City manager, Aguero said: “He’s very demanding about everything. It’s good. The good news is that I’m getting used to it, automatically, to go straight to press the defender because he asks me to do that.
“On the other hand, here at the national team I did it against Peru, and I realised I left the midfield unprotected. I’m used to do it but it in this case it’s Pipa who should do it. Sometimes on the pitch I run, press and forget it.”
Guardiola will be thrilled that his instructions are becoming so ingrained in Aguero’s mind that he’s now doing it without thinking, even if he should be for the national side. The Manchester City manager’s biggest concern will be Aguero coming back fully fit, so there’ll be crossed fingers until the striker touches down at Manchester airport.
