Joao Gomes is likely to leave Wolves in the summer and Napoli are intensifying their attempts for the midfielder.
Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered claims from Il Mattino about the Serie A club’s continued interest in the Brazilian.
They had attempted to sign him in January but a deal proved to be very expensive. Antonio Conte is a big fan of the player and could push for his signature once again in the summer. The manager had wanted a midfielder in January but his club weren’t able to please him.
Napoli had concerns over a lack of non-EU spots but they continue to make in-roads for the Wolves player. Should Conte not get an acceptable midfielder at the start of the window, the manager is likely to agitate.
Contact made for Wolves star
Tuttomercatoweb take a close look at Napoli’s plans for the summer transfer window. They appear certain that the 25-year-old is one of the ‘hottest prospects’ for the Partenopei, who are keen to beat Spanish and English clubs in the chase.
That is why they are already in discussions with Gomes’ entourage and intermediaries for a summer deal.
Groundwork for that has been laid, with Napoli speaking to Jorge Mende. It is believed this will help in talks with Wolves, especially if they get relegated.
Rob Edwards’ side currently demand €40-50m for the midfielder but Conte’s side feel they will get a discount, especially if the Midlands club go down.
This comes right after even Gazzetta dello Sport reported on contact between Gomes’ entourage and Napoli. All of this points to the fact that Napoli are in no mood to give up and are attempting to race ahead of competition.
Our take on Gomes’ Wolves exit
Considering the amount of interest in the Brazilian, he should leave Wolves soon. He has done enough in the Premier League to not be playing in the Championship next season.
Everything may come down to who ends up paying the most. Wolves’ relegation should remove any possibility of the player remaining at Molineux.
As of now, Napoli are struggling to extend Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa’s contract. He has also faced a major injury issue this season, which brings his physical decline to light.
Gomes would technically replace the former Fulham player and he would get regular first-team football in Naples. That is why the deal should appeal to him, if Napoli pay Wolves’ asking price.
