Corinthians’ long-time hunt for a top striker is expected to come to an end in the upcoming months, as they’re hopeful of bringing someone from Europe.

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has been pointed out as one of the main targets, as according to reports from Brazil, the Timão has been in touch with his entourage since the end of the last year.

More recently, Atletico Madrid centre-forward Luis Suarez has also been pointed out as a potential signing. So the two Uruguayans seem to be the favourites for the position, and that’s a subject commented by club sponsors this week.

Speaking to the local media, Taunsa president Cleidson Cruz discussed the chances of helping Corinthians with the signing of one of the two. The question made is if the club’s new striker will be in the Champions League match between Manchester United and Atleti next week.

“It’s a great possibility. My consumer dream is there, but it doesn’t mean it’s the club’s. I can think of one, but I have to respect it. It’s Corinthians who are on the pitch, we have to follow their guidelines. Who knows, maybe one day this dream will come true,” he said (via Torcedores).

Cleidson Cruz also talked about the difficulty of bringing stars from European football to Brazil.

“First, the negotiation is not easy. Brazil sells its image badly. When you go looking for that level of player and say Brazil, there are already a lot of obstacles. It makes it very difficult, it’s not an exchange of European clubs. When you want to look for an A-level player, Brazil’s image works against us. You need to spend a lot of time convincing and when you move forward, the window has already closed or another proposal appears.”

“Values today are normal and within the standards. The club already knows the value and duration of the contract, this is the easiest. The biggest problem is convincing the athlete to live in Brazil.”

Cavani, who only has two goals in 15 appearances for Manchester United this season, has his contract with the Red Devils expiring in the summer.
