As reports from the South American media continue to say that former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is close to an agreement to take charge of the Uruguayan national team, the local press is obviously making many comments about it.
Today, we get to see a few quotes from former manager Sergio Markarian, who’s well respected for his work in and outside of the Latin American country.
Speaking to Radio Sport 890 (via ESPN), he talked about Bielsa’s potential arrival at the national team. That was a long interview, and the coach’s job at Leeds United was mentioned a couple of times.
“My impression is that if Uruguay sign Bielsa, they make a great hire. I don’t know his current condition, I did see his teams, the last one he led in England , where I saw him clinging to a system, I don’t like that very much, but I know that he is a hard worker and that he is a man that is going to hierarchize Uruguayan football.”
Bielsa had his last job at Leeds United, where he took charge of the club in July 2018 and was sacked in February 2022, with a record of 81 wins, 30 draws and 59 losses.
Since his departure from Elland Road, he has been linked to a few clubs, including Everton, but was always very rigorous about choosing his next workplace and didn’t accept any of the offers.
Now it seems the chances of taking charge of Uruguay are big, and there he could do an interesting job following his positive time at Chile.
