Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has backed Hungary star Attila Szalai to be a hit at Stamford Bridge if he makes the move as has been suggested.

Szalai is currently playing for Fenerbahce in Turkey, where he has quickly established himself as a star for the Turkish side.

His performances have not gone unnoticed in Europe, and he’s quickly been linked with several sides, including those in England.

Leicester were said to be admirers in the summer, but it is currently Chelsea who are being most linked with a move.

They could lose as many as three central defenders in the coming months, with Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azplicueta all out of contract in the summer and linked with moves away.

That has led to them being linked with Szalai, and several reports in England have hinted that there is a deal already in place.

Whether that is the case remains to be seen, but Gallas, who managed 225 games for Chelsea, has backed him to be a success if he does make the move.

“I have seen him play in the national team. I consider him a very good, strong and fast defender,” he told M4 Sport.

“He is still very young; he can develop a lot. The fact that he is being discussed with Chelsea is very good.

“If the transfer goes through, it would be good for him. I’m sure a step up in level at London would help him a lot.

“He could learn a lot from the world-class defenders, and of course, he could play against the best strikers in the world in the Premier League.

“Every game in England is physically demanding, but I wasn’t scared at all.”
