Still looking for that striker capable of replacing the injured Arkadiusz Milik, Napoli’s list of targets grows exponentially by the day, with Sassuolo’s Grégoire Defrel the most recently added.
One of the older targets, and when we say older we mean from about a week or so ago, is Newcastle United’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, the man finding form under Rafa Benitez in the north of England.
Linked rather strongly by both the English media and the Italian media, the Serbian goalscorer would fit the profile the club are looking for, but there are some concerns.
While Il Mattino on Thursday admit Mitrovic is indeed being looked at by the Serie A club, they also make it clear that Maurizio Sarri, Napoli’s manager, is having doubts about seriously considering a bid, mostly due to his lack of experience in Italian football.
The main worry is that the Newcastle striker would have to take some time to adapt to life and the style of play in Italy, and that’s something the club cannot really afford considering their already prominent struggles in front of goal.
Manolo Gabbiadini’s inability to find the back of the net means Sarri has had to try different tactics, with false nines and whatnot, when all he wants is that one person who could slot right in and have an instant impact.
Like Simone Zaza, for example.
Thankfully for Newcastle fans, it appears it won’t be Mitrovic
