Towards the back end of last week, some rumours in the Netherlands started to surface that Heerenveen were interested in Chelsea’s Charlie Webster.
The young midfielder, who has yet to feature for the first-team to date, has become a target for the Eredivisie side, who could end up losing one of their stars in Thom Haye.
There was talk they were interested, but now journalist Sander de Vries told Omroep Abe, relayed by Fean Online, that the deal could be close to being done.
First came Jan Vlap, who made it clear the hope was that Chelsea’s Webster could come and evolve just like Mason Mount did when he was loaned out to Vitesse, and is now a regular for England and set for a move to Manchester United.
De Vries, though, is a bit more wary, making it clear that there are no guarantees the Chelsea youngster will explode like the 24-year-old did.
He said: “Have a look first. Chelsea have 40, 50 guys like this that they try to stable. In the end, only one or two become brilliants that eventually make it. It doesn’t mean it’s a bull’s eye, but it’s always possible.”
As for how close it is, he said it’s almost complete: “There is a good chance that he will soon be presented as the first summer acquisition. He’s mainly an eight, which may indicate Thom Haye is also going to make a move.”
