Jordan Henderson joined Brentford on a free transfer in July, days after Ajax accepted his request to terminate his contract.
The midfielder joined the Eredivisie side in January 2024 and made 57 appearances, captaining in majority of those matches.
Ajax’s decision to release Henderson has been criticised in the Netherlands. Earlier this month, the Dutch press said the club’s director of football, Alex Kroes, is still not popular for the decision.
Last week, Kroes defended his side allowing the 35-year-old to join Brentford and also hit back at his critics. Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer doesn’t share the same view and NOS have relayed his comments.
Pasveer, who has been at Ajax since 2021, made his first appearance of the season in their 5-1 Champions League defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday. They have lost all three European matches and have four wins from nine league matches.
The Amsterdam side are currently fourth in the league table, nine points behind leaders Feyenoord. After yesterday’s defeat, the 41-year-old goalkeeper was asked to ‘explain the decline’ of Ajax. This is when he cites Henderson’s move to Brentford as a reason.
“We’re playing a little differently, and in Jordan Henderson, we’ve lost a clear leader,” he said.
“He held everything together, and you definitely miss that. Because a player like that is important for a team with so many young players. You do miss a bit more direction now.”
Henderson has made eight appearances for the Bees this season.
