Rangers defender Leon Balogun has defended the club’s fans decision to celebrate following their recent title success.
Rangers secured their 55th title three weeks ago, capping off a superb campaign for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Like any title success, it was a special occasion for all involved, but this one had extra emotion for Rangers, given it was their first since being relegated down the divisions and broke Celtic’s recent dominance in Scotland.
Predictably, the title success was celebrated wildly by the club’s fans, who congregated outside of Ibrox to party and commemorate the occasion.
That was met with widespread criticism given the current Coronavirus situation, particularly as large meetings of people are currently banned as part of COVID restrictions aimed at limiting the spread of the virus.
Rangers copped some of that criticism, with many believing they should have done more to stop their fans grouping together as they did. Balogun, though, thinks that’s unfair.
“I can’t imagine that things would have been different elsewhere in a long-awaited championship,” he told Kicker.
“And I don’t think the club is responsible for that. It’s not like the club can lockdown the whole of Glasgow. All you can do is appeal.
“But listen, please: especially in this lousy situation that we’ve been experiencing for over a year, there was something that made a lot of people in Glasgow incredibly happy.
“Under the current circumstances of the pandemic, was it the best decision? Probably not. Is it still emotionally understandable? Absolutely.”
