Sometimes, players make decisions that few but themselves understand, and despite feeling they are making the right move, it doesn’t always work out.
This is what happened to Kasim Adams, currently contracted to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in Germany, who revealed to MX24, relayed by Africa Top Sports, in Ghana that he turned down the chance to move to Newcastle United.
The Magpies came forward for him in 2018, when he was still at Young Boys in Switzerland, and he had quite a lot of choice.
He said: “When I wanted to leave Young Boys to go to Hoffenheim, it wasn’t just them who wanted me. I had Newcastle, I had Dortmund. I also had Bayer Leverkusen, but I chose to go to Hoffenheim because I knew that I could grow there. I was just twenty something and I wanted to play more games to grow.”
Adams then explains that he felt that if he joined a club like Dortmund or Newcastle, he would have ended up being a player for the future, especially as the German side still had a peak Mats Hummels in their ranks.
While Newcastle weren’t quite at those heights, the defender felt Hoffenheim was the right move for him at the time, and chose to go there instead.
However, what happened next wasn’t what he had planned for, as the now 28-year-old has only made 37 appearances for the club since his arrival five years ago, spending time on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf and FC Basel instead.
We’ll never know what could have been had he chosen to move to Newcastle, but he still seems happy with his decision.
