On January 13th we covered a report from Gazzetta dello Sport which said Gaston Ramirez had reached an ‘agreement in principle’ to sign for Leicester City.
It came out of the blue and was understandably met with derision from Middlesbrough supporters. Here is a player the player the club need, it was unthinkable he’d join a Premier League rival or have already agreed to do so.
Despite it being a surprise to supporters, it probably wasn’t as big a shock to those who have followed Ramirez transfer sagas previously.

The player is in the rumour mill more than most others and there are regularly claims of agreements being made with clubs, and then a transfer being pushed for. It started when Ramirez was at Bologna and has continued consistently since.
Even when Ramirez first moved to Middlesbrough there were claims the player was already in talks with Uruguayan club Penarol to move there in the summer 2016 window, but Boro’s promotion will have changed that plan.
Ramirez shares an agent with Hull City’s Abel Hernandez, another favourite of the rumour mill who, according to reports, is repeatedly in talks to leave whichever club he’s at.
The Ramirez to Leicester claims have since grown and Sky Sports report he’s handed in a transfer request.
There’s less than week left of the window to get this one sorted, but one thing can be certain: If Ramirez stays at Middlesbrough then as the summer transfer window creaks open, there will once again be claims about the player’s camp being in talks with other clubs.
