Earlier today, we saw Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã claiming Arsenal are leading the race for Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres, and are willing to pay for his €100m release clause.
The striker’s great season with the Lions makes a potential summer move a big topic, and it’s no different while he’s out with the national team.
Gyokeres is now quoted by Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen while having a press conference, as he was asked about the recent links with Arsenal and other European giants.
“It’s a sign that I’ve performed well. But it’s not something I take too seriously, since it’s just speculation. But of course it’s fun,” said Gyokeres.
“We’ll see this summer. It’s not something I know about myself, what will happen. I enjoy Sporting extremely well and feel no stress about the summer coming quickly.”
Gyokeres was playing for Coventry City when Sporting bought him for €21m last summer.
The investment was more than worth it, as he has 36 goals and 13 assists in 39 appearances.
Those stats make it obvious that many clubs will come for his signing, and also give the Lions a good position in the negotiations, as they’re set to demand his €100m release clause to let him go.
We should soon see whether Arsenal are ready to make all that investment, and if they don’t, it’s very likely that someone else will try to bring him back to England.
