Southampton’s Yukinari Sugawara completed a loan move to Werder Bremen towards the end of August.
A month later, the right-back said he’d found it difficult to settle in Germany, especially away from the pitch.
The Bundesliga side have agreed a €6m purchase option with Southampton. Earlier this month, Bild reported the German club are wobbling over exercising the clause due to his recent dip in form.
Deichstube, a website focusing its coverage on Werder Bremen, contacted the club’s head of football, Peter Niemeyer, about Sugawara.
The Southampton owned player has started in every league fixture since joining Werder Bremen, with 14 appearances and three assists. The official has cited the recent fluctuation in his performances due to the lack of pre-season with the club.
Despite the recent dip, the head of football is pleased with Sugawara’s spell so far.
“Overall, he was very consistent and fulfilled his role well. He settled in incredibly quickly and hardly needed any time to make his mark here,” he said.
Deichstube indicates it wouldn’t be surprising if the German club were to buy the defender from the Saints.
The fullback recently said he’s happy at Werder Bremen, but they have to decide whether or not to buy him. The head of football says there’s been no talks with the Championship side over extending Sugawara’s stay.
“There has been no contact with Southampton regarding his future after the season,” Niemeyer explained.
