Earlier today, we covered the Spanish reaction to Monchi being on the verge of leaving Aston Villa.

The Spaniard’s exit is seen as a certainty, and sources close to Monchi were said to have originally told the media that he wants a complete break. Indeed, it was even made to sound like he’s retiring from top level football to concentrate on CD San Fernando and other things.

Unsurprisingly, there were quickly claims in the Seville media that a sabbatical, or retirement, may not be on the cards and instead Monchi could be involved in a takeover attempt at Sevilla.

For Aston Villa the more pressing matter will be a replacement.

Roberto Olabe, who left Real Sociedad in July, is the first name thrown into the ring.

Dario Vasco, a reliable newspaper local to the Basque club, have picked up the claims and given the local stance. It’s explained that when Olabe decided to leave La Real, and said it was due to feeling he’d taken them as far as he could, there were suspicions a move to England was in the works.

Diario Vasco add: ‘Olabe’s signing is a long-standing desire of Aston Villa, championed by Unai Emery, the current club’s sporting director. A few years ago, the Birmingham club attempted to sign the former goalkeeper and manager, but Real Sociedad were at their peak at the time and he decided to stay at Anoeta.’

Marca report Aston Villa attempted to sign Olabe in 2023, and this time the answer could be different.

AS also report Olabe is the chosen one for Aston Villa.
