West Bromwich Albion currently find themselves sixth in the Championship and looking to battle to get to the Premier League.
They’re without a permanent manager, with Chris Brunt doing pretty well on an interim basis and they’re seemingly being no candidate standing out above all others.
Carlos Corberán left West Brom in December to make an emotional move to Valencia. The 41-year-old is from Cheste, in the Valencia region, and now has the task of trying to save his local club from the dreaded La Liga drop.
They currently find themselves 19th out of 20 in La Liga, with just 12 points from 17 matches. After many years of chaos both on and off the pitch there’s a clear panic that this is the season Valencia could go down.
Carlos Corberán has therefore taken something of a gamble and perhaps moved with his heart.
National Spanish newspaper ABC today look at that switch from West Brom, and how emotion will likely have played a big role in the manager’s decision.
They point out he’s set for a ‘baptism of fire’ tonight against Real Madrid.
It’s a home match for Valencia, and the one which should have been played before the DANA weather disaster meant postponement.
That makes it all the more emotional for the crowd, who ABC say dreamed in the days after the flooding that this was a match to look forward to as a symbol of hope.
For Carlos Corberán it’s a chance to start his post-West Brom career as an immediate hero.
