In the long line of Leeds United legends, Jay-Roy Grot is unlikely to ever make the grade. In fact, most wouldn’t even remember him.

Such was the paucity of his time at Elland Road, one goal and one assist in 22 games in four years, most would probably struggle to remember he even played for Leeds.

But that’s not stopped him. In fact, he appears to be going from strength to strength and according to Tipsbladet, could be on his way to the World Cup next year.

They explain that the 27-year-old forward has been called up by the Suriname national team and is expected to make his debut in the World Cup qualifiers next month against Guatemala and Panama.

He was born in the Netherlands and has played in their youth sides but has roots in Suriname, so has changed allegiance to the latter instead.

And he could now be set for a trip to the World Cup, a ‘historic feat’ for the South American nation. They currently top Group F halfway through qualifying and are undefeated in four games.

If they hold their position, they will automatically qualify for next year’s World Cup. A second placed finish will see them get another shot via the intercontinental play-offs.

Suriname have never played in a World Cup, so the country are very much on the verge of a huge achievement. And the Elland Road flop could now play his part, proving that there is life after Leeds.
