Will Still is unlikely to end up at Sunderland, even if he is yet to finalise a deal to take charge at RC Lens.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, who cover the manager today and what is going on with him as Sunderland continue their own search for a new boss.
Still has been linked to the Sunderland job for the best part of a year but the definitive step has never happened, with the two never seemingly becoming close to making a deal happen.
The opportunity appeared to be there this summer after Still became available but he’s instead closing in on a move to RC Lens.
Foot Mercato provide an update on that move, which has been a slow burning one for weeks, and explain that barring an incredible turnaround, the Belgian coach will end up with the French club.
He’ll arrive to replace Franck Haise, whose departure to OGC Nice has now been fully confirmed and leave Lens searching for his replacement.
They’ve been actively working on that for several days and Still is the top priority, with unanimous support at the club for his appointment. Essentially, everything about him fits with what the Artesian club want.
Doubts had been sowed as a deal hadn’t been made official, leading to reports of him potentially ending up at long-term suitors Sunderland instead, aided by Still’s long-stated desire to work in England too.
A deal for Sunderland and him is not in the offing, though, and unless there is an incredible turnaround he will be going to Lens, who are working on the final contractual details.
