Having played every single minute of every single game since his debut against Bournemouth, it would not be too surprising if José Mourinho rested Paul Pogba on Wednesday night against Northampton Town.

The midfielder, who didn’t get a pre-season because of how far France progressed during the 2016 Euros, is yet to fully convince everyone, especially considering Manchester United’s recent results.

Sporadically showing glimpses of his ability, the world’s most expensive player needs to find consistency, as well as the right position for him in José Mourinho’s formation, if he is to live up to the high expectations set upon him by fans and media alike.

One man who thinks it will all eventually click for the former Juventus star is Daniel Riolo, relayed by Le10 Sport, on RMC Sport.

He said: “We’re not seeing enough quality for his status and his price. The price tag has an effect in players’ heads. He cannot be psychologically insensitive to what he cost. He’s obviously going to take time to digest this move.

“Footballers are still human. Back in the day, the big transfers were for players who had already proven themselves. Today, they’re for players who haven’t shown that much. It’s an investment on potential.”

Yet to register either an assist or a goal for Manchester United in 450 minutes of football, the player undoubtedly knows he needs to do something sooner or later.

However, a lot also rests on José Mourinho, who needs to build the team around him and allow him freedom.

The game against Northampton might be the opportunity to try something new, but that could also hinder the player’s fitness ahead of the weekend clash against Leicester.

Decisions, decisions…
