Adrien Rabiot has been linked to Manchester United on numerous occasions in the past.
The France international left Juventus as a free agent at the end of 2023/24 season and joined Marseille for free. Prior to his move to the Ligue 1 club, the Red Devils were said to have shown interest in him.
Rabiot’s mother, Véronique, is also his agent, and she’s opened up on Manchester United’s attempt to sign him in the summer of 2022 during a lengthy interview with L’Equipe.
The midfielder was then at Juventus, and the Red Devils had appointed Erik ten Hag as their new manager. In the Dutchman’s first season at Manchester United, they played in the Europa League and wanted to sign the 30-year-old.
According to the representative, her son was ready to leave Juve, who qualified for the Champions League, to join the English club.
The move didn’t go through, and L’Equipe points out Véronique was accused of being ‘greedy’ by the media. The agent has now denied this suggestion and also explained why her son’s move to Manchester United had failed in 2022.
“But that, too, is completely false. That year, Adrien was ready to leave Juve, who had qualified for the Champions League, for Manchester United, who hadn’t,” he said.
“We discussed the terms, and in the end, they said to me: ‘If we don’t qualify for the Champions League at the end of next season, Adrien’s salary will go down.’ I found that really over the top and very disrespectful.”
“I said, ‘We’re stopping’. They thought it was a strategy to get more [money]. But no, it was a matter of principle, not money. Obviously, it surprised them. They’re not used to it.”
