Forward says playing for Celtic was a dreadful period in his life

 

Former Celtic forward Tony Cascarino has revealed his time with the Scottish giants was a difficult period in his life. The 54-year-old spent just one season with Celtic after signing from Aston Villa.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, Cascarino was asked about his time at Parkhead, and also being Celtic’s record signing at the time. The former Republic of Ireland international said it should have been the perfect move given his background, but he soon found it to be a dreadful time in his career.

Cascarino said there was too much pressure playing for the club, and that he really wanted to remain in England.

“It was a dreadful period in my life, both personally and professionally. It should have been the perfect scenario, an Irish No.9 playing for Celtic, and I was going to play for my friend and idol Liam Brady, who was manager. My heart just wasn’t in it, and I didn’t want to leave England. It was just so intense up there, as you were always reminded about the football,” said Cascarino on his time in Scotland.

Cascarino only played 24 league games for Celtic, scoring just 4 goals in his time in Glasgow. The forward returned to England the next season when he signed for Chelsea, before going on to have huge success with Marseille in France.
