Diego Lugano’s spell at West Brom wasn’t something very memorable. The Uruguayan defender played for the Baggies in the 2013/14 season, but only managed to make 12 appearances for the club.

He arrived on a free transfer from PSG, but failed to impress and ended up leaving West Brom for free. It even took him a little time until finding a new club, signing for BK Häcken in Sweden eight months later.

Over his West Brom spell, Lugano is now back at São Paulo, where he became an idol having won the Copa Libertadores and the World Cup of Clubs in 2005. In an interview with ESPN Brasil, he recalled his short time in the Premier League with West Brom.

“It was at the time of the World Cup, when I injured my knee. I had to stop for six months. That’s why I rescinded [the contract]”, he told ESPN Brasil.

Although relegation is taken in South America as a something you don’t even want to think about, the player said he was quite shocked about how the English people accept it: “They are prepared to be relegated. The contract of each player, marketing, TV. They always have the option A: if they play in the Premiership. Option B, if the team’s relegated. It’s not very dramatic. It was something that surprised me. ”

On the best players he faced in England, Lugano said: “In that time, Suarez was flying at Liverpool. But I faced Hazard at Chelsea, Ozil at Arsenal, Rooney at Manchester.”

“It’s the best league in the world to play. It’s a shame to have arrived so late in England, at the age of 33. It could have happened much before.

The Premier League is made for the public to enjoy the show. The Premier is currently obviously the best in the world. Every team is competitive and every game is a pleasure.”

It’s good to know that despite his poor West Brom period, Lugano is still fond of English football.
