We love Benoit Assou-Ekotto at Sport Witness, mostly because he’s always very candid in his interviews, which is extremely refreshing in a world where calculated answers are rife.

The former Tottenham left-back has spent the past two seasons with Metz in France, but his adventure with the soon-to-be Ligue 2 side will come to an end in June once his contract runs out.

Speaking to Le Républicain Lorrain in France, the defender was asked what he’d take away from his spell in the north-east of France.

His answer? “I had good fun here.”

But that wasn’t all, as the French newspaper also wondered if certain things had shocked him during his time with the club, and that’s when he really let it rip.

He said: “Since I returned to France, yes. The sh** refereeing. Finding a fan 10 metres away from the dressing room after training. I never saw that at Tottenham, great club, very professional.

“Apart from four clubs in France, I think the rest aren’t very professional, even if I haven’t been everywhere. But when you say stuff like that, you come across as an old fart, so you just go along with it, you look around and smile. You live an easier life that way.”

During his time at White Hart Lane, where he spent nine years following his £4.5m transfer from Lens, the left-back featured 205 times, scored four goals and picked up 10 assists for Tottenham.

Now 34 and soon to be without a club, Assou-Ekotto doesn’t exactly know what he’ll do with himself, but he’ll make his mind up quickly after some running in the summer.

If he feels he’s ready to continue, then the former Tottenham player will try and continue his career as best he can.

After all, there’s worse jobs than being a footballer.
