Former Leeds United forward Andy Ritchie believes the Championship Player of the Year will be between Elland Road favourite Chris Wood and Newcastle Untied forward Dwight Gayle. Wood and Gayle are also fighting it out to become the league’s top scorer this season.
Writing in his column for the YEP, Ritchie said it will be Gayle or Wood named the best player from the Championship despite the competition from Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert.
The former Leeds United star thinks Wood has been the surprise package this season, and believes he’s a more complete player than the Newcastle United forward.
“I don’t think I would go for Knockaert. I think it would be between Gayle and Wood. I think maybe everybody has known about Gayle before but in terms of a more complete player, I have seen Chris grow into that. I’m biased anyway but I would go for Chris, though it will be a very, very close call,” said Ritchie.
Wood and Gayle and have been neck and neck in the goalscoring charts for most of the season, but it’s the Leeds United star who’s pulled away in recent weeks.
Woods’ brace in Leeds United’s last game against Brighton took the New Zealander to 24 league goals, and he’s now 3 clear of the Newcastle United star.
