Former Leeds United forward Andy Ritchie has expressed his concerns about the attendance at Elland Road last Tuesday. Under 10,000 turned up to watch Leeds United progress to the next round of the EFL Cup.
In his column for the YEP, Ritchie spoke about the low turnout against Blackburn Rovers, and the former Leeds United star believes this should be much higher for a club like the Championship side. Ritchie thinks they should be getting up to 15,000 for such a game. However, Ritchie realised with this just being an EFL Cup game some Leeds United fans may have stayed away because of the price of a ticket.
“Obviously, the attendance of 8,488 for the EFL Cup game with Blackburn Rovers earlier this week at Elland Road made the headlines and that’s a small crowd by Leeds’ standards.
“Really you would expect at the very least, a gate of 10-12 to 15,000 for a game like that, even though it is the EFL Cup. Maybe people made their voice known about the pricing, I don’t know,” said Ritchie on the attendance against Blackburn Rovers.
Despite the low turnout against Blackburn Rovers Leeds United have continued to have high attendance since dropping out of the Premier League over a decade ago.
Last season Leeds United were ranked in the top five for Championship average attendances despite the issues fans were having with owner Massimo Cellino.
