In the past couple of weeks, there’s been a rumour regarding Flamengo willing to sign Philippe Coutinho from Aston Villa.
Both the Brazilian and the English media talked about that, with claims saying the Villans made a big request for the player.
There’s a particular club bothered by that story, and that’s Vasco da Gama. That’s where the Aston Villa man grew up, and their fans now feel betrayed that the player could be negotiating with their biggest rivals.
It turns out there are now claims saying those talks never took place. Those are made in the Youtube channel of one of Vasco’s biggest legends, Edmundo Souza.
In a chat about the market, Edmundo had been speaking to journalists Guilherme Camarda and Fabio Azevedo. The latter come up with some information saying Aston Villa haven’t even been speaking to Flamengo about that move.
“Forget it. Ed knows his representative very well, he’s here in Doha, Cacau Barbosa. Forget it, there was no conversation,” said Fabio Azevedo.
“Once, Cacau told me the following: ‘Fabio, Philippe knows that he’s an idol for Vasco fans, that he’s a reference for the boys. What is a reference for the boys? That’s when they go up, sign a contract, they enter the room, they see the photo of Philippe Coutinho. So why would I negotiate him with Flamengo? Spoil that image of him, no need’. Financially it’s settled. Then there was no conversation, there was fake news.”
Philippe Coutinho has 13 appearances for Aston Villa this season, with no goals or assists, and hasn’t had a start for the club since the 10th of November.
His contract with the Villans runs until 2026.
