Earlier this month, Gazzetta dello Sport again covered Napoli’s interest in Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.
The Englishman is looking to depart in search of more game time. Napoli made tentative efforts in the summer and are ready to move for him again in January.
Journalist Emanuele Cammaroto has spoken to NapoliMagazine about the 20-year-old and a potential Manchester United exit.
“Mainoo remains a forbidden dream, but to date Manchester United have not opened up about his departure. We’ll see if they do and whether they would eventually accept a loan with a right to leave rather than an obligation. [It is] a condition that Napoli would impose.”
The journalist also claimed that due to Manchester United’s current stance, Napoli are considering alternatives.
“Apparently, Manna is exploring several options. The strategy is now changing. Hiring a midfielder to back up Anguissa was considered a possibility but not a necessity by Napoli.
“Now it’s a must. Given the repeated departures Anguissa will be forced to make between the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup play-offs. The scenario is fluid and there are potential surprises.”
Mainoo isn’t seen as a key player by Ruben Amorim at this moment in time, and is yet to start once in the Premier League this season. This will impact his chances of playing at the World Cup in 2026, which look slim at the moment.
Amorim is obviously key in all of this. The manager could use Mainoo more at Manchester United, or indeed find himself out of Old Trafford if results don’t improve. The coming weeks will be key.
