Dutch icon Marco van Basten has admitted he still has doubts about Wout Weghorst’s suitability to Manchester United, despite the Dutchman making a positive start to his loan deal.

The striker joined Manchester United on loan earlier this month, ending a loan spell in Turkey with Besiktas to join from Burnley.

He is the currently the short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, whose contract was mutually terminated before the World Cup after a major falling out between him and the club.

The decision to sign Weghorst has been questioned by many given the struggles the player endured during a short and unsuccessful spell with Burnley at the end of the season.

The belief is that he is nowhere near good enough to lead the line for a club like Manchester United, especially given the long list of world class centre forwards they’ve boasted down the years.

Weghorst has gone some way to dispelling those myths with a positive start to life in Manchester, but Van Basten is still not convinced it’s a good deal for Manchester United.

“I still have my doubts about it though, because after all, it’s a player who used to be at Burnley,” Voetbal Primeur report him saying.

“That’s not really a top club in England. He comes from Turkey now… I have to say I am a bit bothered by it.

“I know less about it than Erik ten Hag. Sure, he has venom, shows commitment and he is physically present with his body.”
