Club Brugge defender Bjorn Engels has told the Belgian media he expects to leave the club next summer. The Belgium international has been linked with a move to England in the past 12 months, with Arsenal recently linked.
Speaking to HLN, Engels was asked about his future at Club Brugge after his club and international teammate Thomas Meunier joined PSG earlier in the transfer window. Engels doesn’t expect to leave this summer, but revealed this is likely to be his last season with the Belgian side.
Engels is keen to be part of Club Brugge’s participation in the Champions League if they make the group stages, and also hopes to have domestic success with the Jupiler champions this season. Engels went on to say that after this season it would be the ideal time to find a new club.
“The Champions League my last chapter at Club Brugge? I think so. I hope we play a good campaign and we again have a very good season. Then it is the ideal time to leave,” said Engels on his future.
Earlier this month we covered reports from the Belgian and British media that Arsenal had tabled a bid of in the region €16m to sign Engels in this transfer window. It seemed to be a bit of a mess, and was highly likely to be fictional.
With Arsenal’s defensive issues at the moment Engels is a possible option, and even though he recently extended his contract with Club Brugge he is likely to move next summer.
Perhaps a longer term issue than one for right now.
