Big English clubs have for years been used to dramatise transfer stories in the European media. Linking one of the Premier League’s big boys can spice things up, and also up the perceived value of a player.
Then, when the player involved signs for another club, the English club can be held aloft as losers in a transfer they may never have been interested in. Everton have become much more popular in this sense during the current transfer window.
A new found wealth at Goodison Park, and a determination to spend it, sees Everton thrown into lots of transfer chases which may have nothing to do with them. Emre Mor to Inter Milan looks like it could fall into that category.
Gazzetta dello Sport report a ‘flash operation’ from Inter has pushed all competition aside, and seen them beat AS Roma, Fiorentina, and Everton.
Ronald Koeman’s club were ‘very interested’ in signing Mor from Borussia Dortmund, according to the Italian newspaper.
However, it’s tough luck for Everton because Mor is Inter bound and the Italian club can hold him aloft like a trophy.
To be fair to the media following Inter, they do have to talk up every signing this summer, considering how impressive the club’s rivals AC Milan have been in the market.
