Even though Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in the world a couple of years ago, he’s now being questioned.
That’s not only for the Reds, but also for his national team, where he’s now being criticised following the Netherlands’ defeat to France in the World Cup Qualifiers.
With the Oranje losing 4-0, a lot was said about Louis van Gaal’s game system and Van Dijk’s performance, by Gertjan Verbeek on Omrop Fryslan (via Soccer News).
“I think Van Dijk is a first class wimp. I would immediately take away his captain’s armband.
“He has to mean a lot more as a captain. He has to put things down. It happens to him. At one point he lets Geertruida drown and then he stands there after the first goal, like: blablabla. Where was he then?”
Following the match against France, the Netherlands are now playing Gibraltar on Monday evening.
At Liverpool, Van Dijk continues to hold a crucial position, with 31 appearances this season, captaining the Reds multiple times.
With the ups and downs of Jurgen Klopp’s side, they currently stand in 6th, but a positive run could bring them back to the tussle for a place in the Champions League.
Liverpool have a tough sequence ahead as they’re about to face Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in a row.
