Bayern Munich were right to back away from Nick Woltemade this summer and not get involved in the ‘financial madness’ that Newcastle United did to sign him.
That’s according to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, speaking to SportBILD, who believes the German champions have a good enough squad as it is.
Woltemade appeared destined to join Bayern throughout the summer as they targeted him to support and then replace Harry Kane.
A deal could not be agreed with Stuttgart for him, though, with the German side demanding a top fee throughout negotiations that Bayern never came close to paying.
Stuttgart instead got that from Newcastle, who arrived at the end of August and agreed a €75m deal, that could go as high as €90m with various add-ons, for the striker instead. They were happy to pay such a fee as they were selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for €145m.
Bayern were never going to pay such a fee and quietly stepped away from any deal, despite numerous reports insisting that Woltemade was determined to sign for them this summer.
The Newcastle deal has been questioned by all back in Germany, with many believing that they have massively overpaid for the 23-year-old. Rummenigge, it appears, is definitely in that camp.
“We could have signed Woltemade,” he said.
“But I also have to say: FC Bayern would be wise not to participate in every financial madness. I’ve always said: We want sporting success, but please with serious and solid financing. We have a top team. This year again.”
