Leaf through the long, detailed history of Everton Football Club and the name Joshua Zirkzee would do well to get a passing mention.

The young striker’s time at Goodison Park was brief, to say the least, with the 18-year-old spending a short time on trial with the Blues back in 2017.

It was a move that nearly became a permanent one, something Zirkzee has admitted himself, labelling the Blues as a ‘serious option’ in an interview back in January.

He’s since broken through into the Bayern first-team this season, catching the attention with a series of impressive performances and three goals and one assist in the Bundesliga so far.

Everton can consider him one that got away but, it seems, had he joined the Toffees permanently, it may have created something of a fuss.

According to Algemeen Dagblad, Feyenoord were ‘furious’ that the youngster trained and played in two exhibition games for Everton in the summer of 2017 as, according to the Rotterdam club, the Blues ‘had not asked permission’ for that to happen.

That certainly would have kicked up a stir had Everton decided to try and make the move permanent, with it unlikely the Dutch side would have been willing participants in any negotiations.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, for Everton that never became the case as Zirkzee headed elsewhere and is now enjoying life in Bavaria.
