In dire need of a new centre-back in the summer, Manchester United threw the kitchen sink at Raphaël Varane, a player Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign before his move to Real Madrid.

They got their man, and while he has enjoyed a decent start to his life at Old Trafford, injuries have reared their ugly head, meaning continuity has been hard to come by for the World Cup winner.

The defensive issues at Manchester United still aren’t fixed, which is why we are seeing new rumours emerging from Spain that the Red Devils are interested in Jules Koundé.

AS in Spain have an article on the matter, claiming there is a ‘fear’ that the Premier League side could come swooping in for the France international, who has managed to get over his failed move to Chelsea and returned to his former self, allowing Sevilla to boast the best defensive record in La Liga to date.

It’s explained Manchester United ‘continue to monitor him’, especially since Varane ‘has not achieved the performance he had at Real Madrid and Harry Maguire leaves many doubts’.

AS point out Manchester United have ‘money to undertake a large incorporation into the winter market, and Koundé’s clause remains at €80m’.

For Sevilla, ‘they know it will be almost impossible to keep the French defender beyond this season’, but there is also ‘apprehension about the possibility that a club, like United, present themselves in January with the money of the release clause and take him the hard way’.

If that is the case, ‘the final word will be Koundé’s’, and should he decide to leave, Monchi ‘has in his agenda various urgent alternatives’.
