PSV Eindhoven were lucky not to concede more against Arsenal in a game that clearly showed the gulf between the two sides and their players.
That’s according to analyst René van der Gijp, who was full of praise for Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus following the Gunners’ 4-0 win in the Champions League.
Arsenal hosted PSV at the Emirates last night in the opening game of their Group B campaign and ran out comfortable winners, with goals from Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard sealing a comfortable win.
While that was a big scoreline there is no denying that it could have been even greater, with Arsenal dominant throughout the game and showing their quality.
It was an impressive display from Mikel Arteta’s side, who showed the gulf in quality between the two sides and why they were Premier League title contenders last season.
It was also a performance that was needed for several of their players, particularly Jesus, who is still battling his way back to full fitness and establishing himself as the key forward in Arteta’s plans.
He did that against the Dutch side and Van der Gijp was impressed by his performance, comparing it to that of PSV’s Santiago Giménez.
“PSV plays against NEC, RKC and FC Utrecht every week,” he said.
“I have experienced that too. But I have also played with PSV against Bayern, Manchester United and Barcelona. Then you are shocked. You are really shocked.
“This goes so quickly and so many good solutions are found. All ball handling is good. You wonder: where have I ended up? Really.
“It could have been 6-0 after half an hour. They were completely pushed from pillar to post. We think Giménez is a great striker.
“But the bad thing is that Gabriel Jesus is three times better. He is fast, agile and strong. You don’t experience that. Here you play against Michiel Kramer, he can’t do anything. He would play in the fourth division in England.”
