AFC Bournemouth had a day on the spotlight in Brazil after Rayan’s emotional performance for Vasco in what could be his final appearance before a move to England.
A night with a clear farewell tone
The 18-year-old forward scored twice in Vasco’s 4-2 win over Maricá in the opening match of the 2026 state season. According to Globo Esporte, the game carried a strong farewell atmosphere from start to finish.
Rayan had almost missed out on the squad due to the advanced Bournemouth talks, but he personally asked to play. Even with some resistance from people involved in the deal, the striker insisted on taking the pitch while no contract had yet been signed with Bournemouth.
That decision proved decisive. Rayan delivered two goals and played a leading role in the win, turning what could have been a quiet goodbye into a highly emotional night.
Reaction from the stands and the bench
The response from the crowd underlined the moment. As Rayan left the pitch late in the second half, supporters chanted “stay”. He waved back, hugged teammates on the bench and embraced head coach Fernando Diniz, who is not a fan of his exit at all.
The scenes summed up the uncertainty surrounding his future and the bond he still has with the club.
After the match, Diniz left no doubts about his view. “I do not think this is the moment for him to leave for any club, for any amount, right now. I am speaking purely from a sporting point of view and from the bond I have with him.”
He continued: “If he were my son, I would tell him never to leave Vasco at this moment. I think he should stay at least one more season. He’s worth more than what’s being negotiated. After today’s game, he’d already be worth two or three million more. He just needed time to do things.”
Finally he concluded: “He deserves to leave here with a different kind of status and in a situation where he can choose where to play. At the end of the year, he would leave renewed, more experienced, and most likely with a call-up to the Brazilian national team.”
Bournemouth negotiations continue behind scenes

Despite Diniz’s stance, talks continue to move forward. A fee of €35m (£30m) has already been agreed in principle. The clubs now discuss sell-on clauses and future percentages. Earlier in the day, Rayan and his representatives met Vasco directors and confirmed his desire to play in Europe.
Bournemouth’s project reportedly appealed to all sides. The club presented itself as a stepping stone, allowing Rayan to adapt to European football before aiming for a bigger move later on.
Voices from Brazilian football
Former Brazil striker Romário warned about the risks of an early exit. He also not sounded so fond of the transfer. “Rayan is a player with a very bright future and the ability to move to a big club in Europe,” he said.
“What cannot happen is leaving a big club here to play for a medium or small team there, disappear, and then come back devalued after some time. I hope that does not happen with Rayan,“ he concluded.
Phillippe Coutinho, a former Premier League star who now plays at Vasco alongside Rayan, also commented after the game. He said: “I did not have any conversation with Rayan about this. But he is still very focused here. Otherwise, he would not have scored!” he joked.
“For me, it is always a pleasure to play with him. We have always seen the size of his potential, and last year he showed it with a brilliant season. I wish him all the success in the world. I just hope I can play with him for longer,” he revealed.
On the other hand, Brazilian pundit Alex Souza focused on Vasco’s position. “The issue for Vasco, like most Brazilian clubs, is making a sale and having the chance to secure thirty-five or forty million euros. That is a lot of money. It is really hard to say no,” he said.
“It is a spectacular market, especially for Rayan, who has the physical profile to play abroad and succeed there. He went from being a promising player to a protagonist, a goal scorer, someone who decides important matches,” he explained. “So if he is leaving, it is fair and even nice that he turns this page and leaves this legacy and this money so Vasco can keep moving forward.”
For now, no final agreement has been signed. Still, the scenes on the pitch and the reactions afterward suggest Bournemouth’s move is nearing a decisive stage, with Rayan’s next steps likely to become clearer soon. But looks like the Cherries are in for a major bargain.
