Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has been in the headlines this week in Denmark as he is on international duty with his country, and it’s not always been for the best reasons.
For example, the midfielder was accused of being robotic during his press conference, as he refused to comment on the transfer rumours that surrounded him throughout the summer.
However, the Tottenham player, who might not be thrilled at his situation in London, was delighted for one of his national teammates, Nicolai Vallys, who made his debut for Denmark in the 4-0 win against San Marino.
He said: “I’m happy that the two made their debut, but I’m extra, extra happy for Vallys. It’s a Skjold boy we got on, after all. I don’t know if touching is the right word, but it’s fantastic and he shows that even if you start a little behind, things are still possible.
“These are the stories we like in life. I think he should be proud, and his family should be proud. I still remember him from the trips to the Vildbjerg Cup and various trips with Skjold.”
For those who aren’t aware, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, before playing for the likes of Bayern Munich, Southampton and Tottenham, started his career at BK Skjold in 2003, where he stayed until 2007, when he moved to FC Copenhagen.
That’s where he met Vallys, who is now a fully fledged Denmark international at a later age in his career than he would have wanted, and yet will be delighted to have achieved it.
