Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa

Sunderland attempted to sign Napoli’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa last summer. The midfielder is appearing likely to depart the Italian club and this can hand another opportunity to the Black Cats.

The former Fulham player has become a bit of an icon for the Partenopei. He’s won two Serie A titles, with the latest triumph coming last season.

Right after that, doubts emerged about his future.

Sport Witness covered Sunderland’s approach for the Cameroon international but this effort was rejected by Napoli. Antonio Conte’s side appeared close to handing him a new deal and extending his stay beyond 2027.

For various reasons, that didn’t happen and Zambo Anguissa finds his situation in Naples uncertain once again.

Player’s family wanted Sunderland transfer

Il Mattino go into detail about the midfielder’s situation, revealing that an injury issue earlier this season was one of the reasons Napoli didn’t hand him a new deal.

It reduced Zambo Anguissa to making only 21 appearances in all competitions. Despite that, the newspaper feel there is every chance English clubs will come forward for the 30-year-old.

The outlet report Sunderland were serious about signing him last summer and so were Bournemouth. At that point, Zambo Anguissa’s family wanted to return to England and a switch to the Premier League was the plan.

Conte convinced him into staying and there were talks about a renewal. Napoli now realise that a new deal will be a gamble and his exit this summer is a possibility.

Turkish clubs are interested but the report makes it clear that suitors like Sunderland can step up again.

Our take: Sunderland should take gamble

Due to Zambo Anguissa’s fitness worries, a transfer will be a risk. But since his contract runs out in 2027, Sunderland may not have to pay much.

They could land a Premier League-experienced player for an affordable fee at a point when the midfielder still adds value in the heart of the park. He thrives at carrying the ball forward and has earned a reputation for coming up with important goals as well.

Perhaps, using him around the final third will reduce the physical load on Zambo Anguissa and help Sunderland bring more out of him. Considering how his family was keen on a move to England last summer, he would be interested in a deal in 2026.
