On Saturday morning, Sky Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg put out a tweet stating Eric Dier had reached a verbal agreement to sign for Bayern Munich.
It was a surprise development even if the Tottenham player had been linked during the summer window. Back then, recruiting Dier was seen as a step which could help Harry Kane settle in Germany.
Kane clearly hasn’t needed that help and a return for Dier would be so he could fill several holes in the Bayern squad. Thomas Tuchel has been looking for a defensive midfielder and a central defender during the January market, and the Tottenham player is a cheap option who could fill both roles.
Sky Deutschland later calmed the rush a little, making it clear that whilst the outline of a deal was in place for Dier, he was just an option for Bayern and there were alternatives.
Sky reiterate that there’s a verbal agreement for a move and that Dier is ‘on the list’, but there’s no clarity over when a move will happen and they’re not saying that it 100% will.
Tuchel didn’t want to comment directly on Dier, and Freund’s “That’s a fact” comes from the following – when asked about contact with the Tottenham player – so is a bit twisted: “It is a fact that we are in contact with some players and are currently having some conversations.”
