Fabian Schar has been a key player for Newcastle United this season, someone Steve Bruce picks whenever he’s fully able to represent the team. That was the case again at the weekend, as the defender looked set to play the full 90 minutes in the Magpies’ 3-2 victory over Southampton.

However, during that match he picked up a knee injury and was carried from the pitch on a stretcher, clearly in some pain. He later took to Twitter, detailing his disappointment and upset over the situation.

Newcastle United have announced their player won’t be available for several months after tearing a knee ligament. For Schar, the issue of taking part in the delayed Euro 2020 tournament will be very much in focus, and that’s the same for the Swiss media.

Blick have managed to get a few words with the player, and he touched upon the issue of possible surgery, something which will surely be considered in the coming days.

The Swiss newspaper quote Schar as saying: “I don’t yet know whether it needs an operation. But I’ll do everything I can to be at the Euros.”

Regardless of whether he has an operation or represents Newcastle again this season, Schar believes it’s realistic he’ll be able to represent Switzerland in the summer.

With his Newcastle contract expiring in the summer, the 29-year-old also has the worry of where he’s going to play next season. If it wasn’t for the injury he’d have had no issues getting a contract at the Magpies or elsewhere, now everything will depend on his recovery.
