Sheffield United have achieved promotion to the Premier League after a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane on Wednesday.
Second half goals from Sander Berge and Anel Ahmedhodžić have helped the Blades finish the season in second spot. The latter has been an integral part of the club’s defence since he arrived from Malmö FF last summer.
Reports in the UK stated Sheffield United will have to pay £1m in bonuses to the Swedish club if they sealed promoted to the Premier League. Fotbollskanalen got in touch with Malmö sporting director Daniel Andersson for an update about this claim.
“Well, I can’t really say anything about it because it’s an agreement between two parties,” he said.
“You can speculate about whether you want a bonus if you sell a player to the Championship or not.”
The Fotbollskanalen journalist mentioned that he would have included a bonus clause if he was the sporting director who sold the 24-year-old to Sheffield United. The Malmö chief gave a cryptic response to that.
“There could be a bonus! It sounds reasonable,” Andersson explained.
The interview took place before Sheffield United’s clash against West Brom.
When asked if the Blades were the ‘wise choice’ for the defender, Andersson said: “Really. Now they are going to bring it home, but if they go up, it was extremely wise. He has gained tremendous experience and played many matches in a tough league. The Championship is no joke.
“It is fantastic. The season he has had, selected in the team of the year… It shows that we have produced a good player, who we are proud of and who continues to do well. So, it’s great for the MFF brand.
“But above all, I’m happy for Anel. He’s had a fantastic season, and if he goes up now, it’s incredibly strong but also important for his continued career.”
