Cody Gakpo’s injury at Liverpool has caused ‘extra disappointment’ ahead of the next international break for Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, who would have been planning with him.

That’s according to ESPN, who say the injury is one of several that is causing ‘major problems’ for Koeman, who has been left short of options up front.

They explain that the Dutch coach is short of options for the clashes against France and Greece next week, with Gakpo joining Memphis Depay on the injury last weekend.

He picked up a knee injury in Liverpool’s win over Tottenham later being spotted in a knee brace, with the injury expected to keep him out for weeks.

That means he’s a definite absence for the next international break, something which is ‘extra disappointing’ for Koeman as Gakpo has been in good form for the Reds of late, bagging three goals in his last five matches.

It is also ‘extra sad’ for the player, who would have been a key player in this break thanks to the form he’s been showing at Anfield, which has also kept Darwin Nunez out of the side.

How Koeman adapts remains to be seen, with other options such as Brian Brobbey or Donyell Malen expected to be given their chance to make their mark.

Neither of those players have the status that Gakpo does, though, with the Liverpool man’s tally of eight goals in 19 games for his country an enviable one and a sign of his importance to Koeman, who will be sorely missing him next week.
