Getting loans right is often very difficult, and something most clubs have issues with on a repeated basis.
August is too early to judge whether a temporary move will work out or not, but Andréas Hountondji is thrilled with his start to life at St. Pauli, having arrived at the German club from Burnley.
Hountondji signed for the Clarets from Caen in 2024 and moved to Standard Liege on loan in January after failing to find the prominence he wanted at Burnley.
Unlikely to be able to break through into the team in the Premier League, he’s been allowed out again. His first Bundesliga match for St. Pauli was against Borussia Dortmund, with the 23-year-old finding the back of the net in a 3-3 draw.
That’s left him thrilled, and Bild quote the forward as saying: “It was an explosion of happiness for me. My first goal in a top league, I’m very happy about that.”
St Pauli’s next match is a derby against Hamburg on Friday evening, and the Burnley owned player has been made aware he’ll become something of an icon if he scores in that game.
To that, he replied: “I’ve already been told that. We’ll see. You never know what will happen…”
One to keep an eye on.
