Patrick Roberts is a good example of a loan gone well. The 20 year old joined Celtic on an extended loan from Manchester City’s in the January 2016 transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers has worked well with the youngster, and Roberts played his part in Celtic’s brilliant season. Celtic would likely wish to keep Roberts for a little longer, and help him progress some more, but Manchester City may prefer the player gets experience elsewhere.

In Germany it’s claimed that Roberts is strongly interesting Schalke. The Bundesliga club have had a very difficult season, with media wars passing blame to the players, and a terrible atmosphere around the club. Going from optimistic and successful Celtic, and supportive Rodgers, to that doesn’t sound the most tempting prospect.

But Schalke are a big club and the German media believe they still have a pull. Despite Rodgers’ advance with Celtic, Bild value a potential transfer in the region of €10m, which sounds very much on the low side.

Manchester City have Roberts on a contract until June 2020, selling him now for €10m would seem like madness.

If Roberts is the subject of a summer of unrealistic attempts, like Schalke’s interest sounds, then there’s every chance a Celtic Park stay could look likelier as time goes by.
