Antonio Conte did everything he could to ensure Tottenham got rid of him last week, rather than simply resigning from his position.
That’s according to Paolo di Canio, who insists that Tottenham “did not betray” the Italian coach despite claims to the contrary.
Conte ended his tenure as Spurs manager last week, coming to an agreement with those in charge over a mutual termination of his deal.
That had been in the pipeline for the past few weeks after his rant following the draw with Southampton before the international break.
That saw him essentially claiming that there is a loser’s mentality at the club, hitting out at his squad and various aspects of the setup above him.
His departure from Tottenham has led to plenty of coverage in his homeland, with some claims that the club have even betrayed the Italian manager.
Di Canio is having none of that, though, and instead believes that his compatriot did everything he could to ensure he was moved on.
“Antonio did everything he could to get himself sent off and not resign,” Calcio News 24 report him saying.
“It’s all legitimate, he didn’t want to give up an important engagement. Those statements were a bit instinctive, and a bit calculated towards a club that paid him so much and did not betray him.
“The discontent was legitimate, maybe he misses Italy. I’m sorry for how it happened.”
