Deniz Undav arrived at The Amex in the summer and has scored one goal from 10 matches in all competitions this season, which came in Brighton & Hove Albion’s EFL Cup win over Forest Green Rovers in August.
The striker’s failure to shine and lack of game time [172 minutes from 10 games] has seen him linked with a move away from the Seagulls.
Last week, Hürriyet explained the Brighton player is the main target for Galatasaray. They are now joined by Schalke and Hertha Berlin in the chase to sign the 26-year-old.
Undav had a chance to join a few German clubs before agreeing a deal with the Premier League side. Bild say it was a ‘mistake’ for him to sign for Brighton and add that Roberto De Zerbi’s man is on Hertha’s ‘wishlist’ for January.
After scoring just 19 goals from 15 games, Hertha want an attacker. Their sporting director, Fredi Bobic, has talked about the need to find the player who would be the right fit for the club.
“It is a difficult market. It has to make sense. Of course, we’re thinking about how we can optimise the squad,” Bobic said.
Over at Der Westen, they report that Schalke tried to sign Undav before he ended up at Brighton.
The German had expressed his love for S04 when he was in Belgium and was open to joining them since he has been a fan of Schalke since childhood. However, the deal didn’t take shape since they couldn’t afford his signing.
Taking Undav’s appreciation for Schalke and his current situation at Brighton into account, ‘suddenly everything fits together’ for the German club to sign him in January. They could have a ‘unique opportunity’ to bring him on loan.
Undav would have to forego part of his salary to join Schalke on loan. The two German clubs could find it hard to get ahead of Galatasaray as Der Westen explain the Turkish club’s signing request is ‘met with open ears’ by Brighton.
