On Tuesday, Amadou Onana insisted he’s fully focused on Everton, after staying at Goodison Park this summer. The midfielder, who is currently with Belgium, made these comments at a press conference on Tuesday.
Today’s Gazet van Antwerpen have covered more quotes from the Everton star, where he has also expressed his desire to become national team captain in the future. The 22-year-old has also explained why he’s suitable to take up this role.
“That is a goal [to be the Belgium captain in the future]. Everyone dreams of being the captain of their country. It’s a big responsibility, but that position also shows that people have confidence in you,” he said.
“I have the qualities to fulfil that role. Off the field I talk to everyone, even if they are different characters. I can read people. You have to know what to say to one person and what to say to the other. And at the right time. I try to be an example on the ground. I will lead the battle.”
The report states Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco is now counting on Onana to take up the leadership in the absence of Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois due to injuries.
De Bruyne gave the Everton player the captain’s armband when he went of the pitch in Belgium’s 3-2 win over Germany back in March.
Gazet van Antwerpen had a chat with Onana’s sister, Mélissa, who is also his agent, and she has hailed her brother’s leadership qualities.
“He’s always been a pioneer. And I know that the national team coach appreciates those qualities, just like his teammates,” Mélissa explained.
“What stands out about Amadou is his courage and determination. No matter the circumstances, if he has something to say, he’ll say it, in a serene manner.
“But above all, Amadou is a diplomatic team player. He strongly believes in the power of the collective. He also knows how to convey that message. When he feels that motivation is waning, he’s able to cheer others up.”
The Belgian has been a regular for Everton since he joined them from Lille in 2022.
Sean Dyche’s side have picked up a point from four games this season and Onana admitted on Tuesday that the time away from the Toffees is a ‘breath of fresh air’.
