Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling has been one of the key players for the Etihad club in their last two title winning campaigns.

The England international had 18 goals and 11 assists to his name in 2017/18 season, followed by 17 goals and 11 assists last term. Sergio Agüero was also another star as the Argentine scored 21 goals each in both those seasons.

Despite Sterling and Agüero shining for City in their last two title success, neither of them won the Player of the Year award. Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk won it most recently, while his club teammate Mohamed Salah was handed the award a season before.

City also won the league during the 2013/14 season and despite the Ivorian midfielder scoring 20 goals and registering nine assists in the league, he was overlooked for the individual award. It was handed to Luis Suárez, who was then at Anfield.

This hasn’t pleased Sterling, who is the second highest valuable player in the world, behind Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé.

During an interview with AS, the Spanish newspaper asked the winger what he needs to do to win the Player of the Year award in England. Responding to that, he said: “It was given to a Liverpool player [Van Dijk] that I think he had a fantastic season, but…”

“It happened in previous seasons, when Touré scored 20 goals as midfielder. Or with Agüero, who has been here since 2011, scores incredible goals and has never won it. I think these players are not treated the same as those of the other teams in England and across the world.”

“De Bruyne was amazing the first year we won the Premier League. Whenever we win something, they give it to the rival team. It is the kind of things that isn’t up to us, but still we continue.”

“Everyone can see it. It is impossible that we win the Premier four or five times without the Player of the Year. This year Liverpool will win and surely the Player of the Year winner will be one of their players. We are not treated with the same respect.”
