Italian newspaper Tuttosport today published the full Golden Boy rankings, after it was revealed Matthijs de Ligt won the award as best U21 player.
A long list had been narrowed down to a final 20, and on that was Everton’s Tom Davies.
He won’t ever have expected to trouble those at the top of the rankings, and came a reasonable 16th.
Whilst de Ligt got 224 points, the young Englishman picked up 9, but clearly had some fans among the European journalists voting for him.
None of the three English journalists gave a placing in their top five, and therefore points, to Davies, so he’s made an impact elsewhere.
Bruno Gentili of Italy’s Rai Sport had him third, Gisle Thorsen of Denmark’s Ekstra Bladet had him fourth, and Dmitriy Zelenov of Russia Sport-Express put the Everton player in fifth.
The 20 year old has struggled for game time recently, picking up just 9 minutes since October.
Given the votes will have been made relatively recently, it’s clear previous performances have left a mark.
